Sabanto Adds Autonomous Planting Support for Row-Crop Planters equipped with a Precision Planting Gen 3 20|20 System

The Sabanto Autonomy System, retrofitted to a tractor, will monitor the Precision Planting system, so growers can plant without an operator in the tractor’s seat, and monitor their machine from afar.
AMES, Iowa, Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Sabanto, the leader in retrofit autonomy, today announced support for planters equipped with the Precision Planting® Gen 3 20|20® system for the spring 2027 growing season. Combining these technologies enables autonomous planting and other precision field operations without the need for an operator in the seat or remote monitoring.
Key Highlights
- Planter-aware autonomy: Sabanto’s Vehicle Operating System (vOS) monitors and reports planter’s performance, which is measured by the Precision Planting system. If a row’s performance falls outside tolerance, vOS will react accordingly and notify the operator. Growers with a Precision Planting Panorama subscription can remotely view information that is presented by the Gen 3 20|20®.
- A new approach to fieldwork: Expands how farmers can deploy autonomous technology with existing equipment and planting practices while reducing capital expense.
- Connected capabilities: Combines fully autonomous tractor operation with Precision Planting® technology in a unified fieldwork experience.
- Grower-set sensitivity: Configurable per-row tolerances in Vehicle Mission Control (vMC) let growers decide when a pause and/or notification is warranted.

Advancing the Way Farming Gets Done
Agriculture has always moved forward through better equipment, agronomy and practices. Today, rising input costs, labor shortages and tighter farm margins call for a new and different approach.
Sabanto believes smaller, cheaper equipment that runs longer beats bigger, more expensive iron. Pairing Precision Planting’s Gen 3 20|20 technology with a Sabanto-retrofitted tractor lets a grower’s existing and trusted planter technology run unattended with the same confidence as having someone in the cab. That makes autonomous planting practical and affordable.
“Growers told us the tractor driving itself wasn’t the hard part of planting – Trusting the planter without someone watching it was. This gives them that confidence and peace of mind with the equipment they already trust,” said Craig Rupp, Founder and CEO of Sabanto
Engineering a More Connected Planting Experience
Planting is agriculture’s most time-sensitive and critical operation. Weather and soil conditions historically lead to narrow planting windows, leaving little margin for inefficiency or downtime. With support for fully autonomous planting, farmers can now balance time constraints and maximize operational efficiency without sacrificing accuracy and consistency during this critical time.
While a tractor is autonomously navigating and performing planting operations, the 20|20 Gen 3 will run and monitor all planting functions row by row including seeding, rate control, prescriptions and as-planted recording, so growers can keep their planter setup while maintaining the data and performance they trust today.
Now that Sabanto’s vOS watches for the same signals an operator would, farmers are free to multitask. Alternatively, an operator can still choose to supervise fieldwork remotely via Vehicle Mission Control (vMC), Sabanto’s autonomous tractor interface. If a row falls outside of tolerance, the tractor can will react accordingly, the remote operator can view the 20|20 to diagnose the issue and take steps to make an adjustment or call the tractor to the field edge for a closer look.
“In 2024 we saw the problem: you can’t support your community if you can’t afford the equipment to put grain in the ground. Equipment costs have dropped in nearly every industry except ours. Sabanto and Precision Planting give us financial runway, mental space and time to ask our neighbors what they need. They’ve built more than a self-driving tractor; they’ve built a platform farmers can trust,” said Quint Pottinger.
