Ob Hospitalist Group Named Newsweek AI Impact Health Award Winner for Best Health System AI Transformation

PR Newswire

GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), the nation’s largest and only dedicated provider of OB/GYN hospitalist services and a leader in comprehensive women’s health solutions, today announced that it has been named the 2026 Newsweek AI Impact Health Award winner for Best Health System AI Transformation.

Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG)

The award recognizes healthcare organizations demonstrating system-wide AI transformation with measurable impact. OBHG was recognized for its work with healthcare technology company Commure to develop and deploy an autonomous medical coding solution that reduces administrative burden on clinicians while supporting coding accuracy and oversight.

OBHG began exploring whether technology could meaningfully reduce the bureaucratic coding burdens clinicians face, which often amount to more than an hour of administrative work during a single shift. In partnership with Commure, OBHG integrated and refined the technology that became the autonomous coding solution being deployed across OBHG’s national network.

“This recognition reflects the value of starting with a clearly defined clinical or business problem and staying focused on measurable outcomes,” said Shane Creech, vice president of information technology at Ob Hospitalist Group. “When technology is built around the needs of clinicians, it can give them meaningful time back to focus on patient care.”

Commure’s Autonomous Coding uses large language models, machine learning, and deterministic coding rules to analyze a clinician’s finalized documentation and generate a draft charge that includes CPT codes, ICD-10 diagnoses, and modifiers. Clinicians review the suggested coding and supporting rationale, make changes when needed, attest to the charge, and release it. Cases that are incomplete or have insufficient confidence are routed for additional review rather than automatically advancing to billing.

The approach has produced measurable results in its initial phases. Within the first months of deployment, OBHG reduced clinician time spent entering charges by 83%, while AI generated coding for more than 85% of charges at pilot sites. Charge-entry time declined from approximately eight to 10 minutes per patient to about 90 seconds. Based on OBHG workflow measurements, the solution has the potential to return approximately 1.5 hours per clinician per shift to patient care.

“Our priority is always to provide high-quality care to the mothers and babies who depend on us,” said Dr. Lisa Bukovac, chief clinical officer at Ob Hospitalist Group. “By thoughtfully integrating AI into our clinical workflows, we’re giving our teams more time to be present for patients during some of the most important moments of their lives. This recognition reinforces our commitment to embracing innovation that supports our clinicians and strengthens the care we deliver.”

OBHG has also built a governance structure around the technology. The organization established an executive steering committee that includes clinical leadership, finance, revenue cycle, compliance, and information technology. Expansion is governed by formal review gates and independent audits, with deployment advancing when established accuracy and clinical validation criteria are met.

The solution is being expanded in phases across OBHG’s network, with deployment planned to reach more than 200 care sites and nearly 2,000 clinicians. Clinicians continue to review and attest to AI-generated charges, maintaining accountability throughout the coding process.

“AI has the greatest impact in healthcare when it removes friction from clinicians’ work without taking them out of the process,” said Tanay Tandon, chief executive officer of Commure. “Our work with Ob Hospitalist Group shows what’s possible when advanced technology is paired with thoughtful implementation and strong clinical oversight. Together, we’re helping clinicians spend less time on administrative tasks and more time focused on the patients who need them.”

The recognition comes as healthcare organizations continue to explore ways artificial intelligence can meaningfully reduce administrative complexity and give clinicians more time with patients.
