Blue Buffalo is helping advance pet cancer research through its longstanding partnership with Morris Animal Foundation, supporting scientific discoveries that could improve the lives of dogs and cats.
Inspired by the Bishop family’s beloved Airedale, Blue, whose battle with cancer led to the brand’s founding, Blue Buffalo was built on the belief that pets deserve the same high-quality nutrition as any other family member. Determined to give Blue the best nutrition possible, the Bishops set out to create pet food made with high-quality, natural ingredients, with real meat first and essential nutrients to support pets’ health and well-being. Today, that commitment continues to drive Blue Buffalo’s mission to help pets live longer, healthier lives through wholesome, nutritious food.
Now, ahead of National Pet Cancer Awareness Month in November, Blue Buffalo is inviting pet parents to join that mission. Through December 31, 2026, the brand will match donations to Morris Animal Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the health of animals worldwide, up to a total of $200,000. The dollar-for-dollar matching program will help support research that could lead to earlier cancer detection and better treatments for dogs and cats.
“Blue Buffalo was founded on the belief that pets are family, and we know how much every moment with them matters,” said Gabriel Viñas, Vice President and Business Unit Director for Blue Buffalo Dog at General Mills. “Blue’s battle with cancer helped inspire our brand and that continues to drive our commitment to pet health. By matching donations to Morris Animal Foundation, we’re giving pet parents an opportunity to make an even greater impact on research that could help families enjoy more time with the pets they love.”
Helping Scientists Better Understand Pet Cancer
For nearly 20 years, Blue Buffalo has partnered with Morris Animal Foundation, contributing more than $9 million to advance research into serious diseases affecting pets, including cancer. This support has helped scientists explore new ways to better understand, detect and treat diseases in pets, including:
- Understanding cancer risk: The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study follows thousands of dogs throughout their lives and has collected more than 650,000 biological samples and 75 million data points to support research into cancer and other health conditions.
- Exploring new treatments and improving diagnosis: Research at Tufts University is investigating potential treatments for canine bone cancer, while research led by Cornell University, alongside Purdue and Virginia Tech, aims to improve diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal lymphoma in cats.
- Advancing early cancer detection: Scientists are exploring how artificial intelligence could help detect early signs of certain cancers, including lymphoma, by analyzing DNA fragments in blood samples.
“Understanding cancer starts with understanding how it develops, and that requires studying animals over time,” said Dr. Kelly Diehl, Senior Director of Scientific Programs at Morris Animal Foundation. “The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is giving scientists an extraordinary resource to explore questions that could ultimately improve how we detect and treat cancer. We’re grateful for Blue Buffalo’s two decades of support and for the pet parents who help make this important research possible.”

About Blue Buffalo
Blue Buffalo started with a promise made to a lovable Airedale named Blue who struggled with cancer, the #1 disease-related killer of dogs and cats. His family, the Bishops, wanted to feed him the best food possible, so they searched for food with high-quality ingredients, but decided to create something even better – natural pet food for dogs and cats with nutritious ingredients, real meat first, and some of the highest standards in the industry. Since Day 1, BLUE’s team of veterinarians and animal nutritionists have carefully selected high-quality, natural ingredients and upheld its True BLUE Promise to dog and cat pet parents – real meat as the first ingredient with NO chicken (or poultry) by-product meals, NO corn, wheat or soy, and NO artificial flavors or preservatives. The result is a portfolio of high-quality, natural food and treats that both dogs and cats love. This simple idea: “Love them like family. Feed them like family.” lives on today in every Blue Buffalo recipe. Visit BlueBuffalo.com to learn more.
